UK Knitting Magazines

Ukmags

I have always loved magazines.

When I was a little girl, I would accompany my mom to the grocery store for the sole purpose of sitting at the magazine rack and reading about all my favorite stars like Madonna, Michael J. Fox, Kirk Cameron, River Phoenix, Duran Duran, and so many more. I would spend hours paging through 16Magazine, Bop, People and Rolling Stone looking for articles to read and pictures to memorize.

During the summer, she would take us to the library. I was a voracious reader and would check out 8 books at a time (the library max for kids). While my sisters were browsing the kid’s section, I would sneak off to the magazine section and look at the Absolut Ads. I was fascinated by them.

I still love magazines. My house is a virtual newsstand with over 20 magazine subscriptions. I still love going to Borders and Barnes & Noble and browsing the magazine section. I especially love that they carry a decent foreign selection of magazines.  My last trip to Borders yeilded this crop of UK knitting magazines.

Simply Knitting is great. A simple magazine with easy and functional patterns, it has great photographs and an ask the Editor section that always gives me a giggle. They also include a free gift with each issue! For June, I got 2 free cable needles! The other magazine is called Knitting. It is also from the UK and its layout is much like Simply Knitting… so much so, that I thought they were the same magazine. I wasn’t as impressed with Knitting (I actually thought it was a bad issue of Simply Knitting until I realized they were 2 different magazines!) but will defintiely keep purchasing Simply Knitting as I find it.

Subscriptions to the US can be purchased, but they are pricey.  I don’t mind paying $8.99US at Borders or Barnes & Noble,

I’m not a fan of Knitting magazine either, I used to have it reserved at my local shop but stopped it.
Never seen Simply Knitting, isn’t it funny that you can find it in the States but I can’t find it in England?!?

Whoa – that took me back!! I had a subscription to 16 Magazine and my friend Andrea had a subscription to the much racier Tiger Beat. We used to peruse them like they were the Dead Sea Scrolls or something. Of course we were wild for David Cassidy and Donny Osmond. Kirk Cameron could be my son. (well, not really….) BWA HA HA HA HA!!!

I didn’t really like Knitting, it has too many ads compared to Simply Knitting. But in my city that magazine is a rare find, three Borders and one Barnes and Noble, you have to get it the day it comes out or you SOL,… but I have found a website you can buy it off of and it only casts you roughly 6.5o-7.oo for it. Although you do have to wait longer for it to arive.

Sadly I can not find a Copy of the forth issue anywhere in Ann Arbor, and am wondering if anybody has a spear to sell.

Hi I usually but it from Barnes and Noble and they are usually quite late with the issues of simply knitting and the most of any issue I have seen is 3 but I have never seen one with the free gift included. Can you get the gift in the us? Im not sure why I have never seen the magazine with the gift in my barnes and noble.

i was very impressed with knitting when i first found an issue last year but its really taken a nosedive! patterns are obscure and very old fashioned. however……….simply knitting is great and keeps getting better!! get this magazine now!!! if you haven’t found knitting magazine though – don’t bother looking.
