What social gathering rocked your socks off in 2010? Describe the people, music, food, drink, clothes, and shenanigans.
We only went to a handful of parties this year but perhaps the most unique and fun was the Oktoberfest party that Ben and Laura hosted in August, and dubbed Augustfest. (All of their October weekends were booked up, so they improvised!)
The party started at 6pm with Ben and Laura in their traditional Oktoberfest clothing, lederhosen for him and a dirndl for her. We were given our choice of German beer or Radler (which is basically a shandy- beer mixed with sprite or 7up (we used Fresca!) and tastes like lemonade). Once everyone arrived, we sat down at long tables and ate a hearty meal of sausages, potatoes, vegetables and pretzels. There was sauerkraut and mustard, as well as rolls and gingerbread heart-shaped cookies.
The music was a cross between polka and traditional German drinking songs. Ben and Laura did their best to teach us a few so we could sing along. After dinner, we were invited to play some games of skill in the backyard. There was a ring-toss game, a game of strength that required holding a beer stein of water in front of you keeping your arm straight, a beanbag toss at empty cans and finally a cow-milking challenge that included a rubber latex glove and a shot-glass. Surprisingly, I was the overall winner! Fun!
The festivities lasted well into the evening and we all had a great time drinking beer and playing games.
