I drove to Virginia Beach from Philadelphia yesterday. On a good day, the trip usually takes about 6 hours. That gives me a lot of time to listen to music. I previewed some new music and a few playlists for upcoming PhillyMINI events and then I just wanted to listen to something that I knew and could sing along to. I settled on Sufjan Stevens. I love his record, Illinois. The lyrics are poinient and as H calls him, he's a "musical genius". His songs surge with strings and swirls and it's just so lush. I crank up the volume and let it surround me.
Listening to it yesterday got me thinking about when I saw him in concert. It was the day before my birthday and pouring rain. He was playing the Tower Theater and I asked Harper, Alan & Jennifer and AmyG if they wanted to go with me. We met at the Tower, browsed the merchandise table and then settled in for an unexpected experience. I remember that we made friends with the guys in the row in front of us and had giggle fits when the band came out with wings on. It was very sweet, but we were in a silly mood and had that whole inappropriate laughter thing going on. We even got shushed at the start of the show (I thought they were just tuning up their instruments!)
In any event, the show was amazing. I remember being really impressed with the screens behind the band and I remember trying to capture them on film. So favorite photo friday is a shot from the Sufjan Stevens show, 9.28.06.
